talk of japanese soul often refers to enka, the sentimental ballad emanating from downhome bars and karaoke boxes. from the late 1960s, however, reverberations from across the pacific would lead to the nation’s own take on soul music as we know it in the west. some of the artists showcased on this compilation may not have been commercially successful but their legacy stands the test of time.

der name des 10ten erasure albums ist programm: sie interpretieren die songs anderer künstler neu. 12 coverversionen räumen nicht nur andy bell die möglichkeit ein seine stimmlichen fähigkeiten auszuspielen, sondern lassen auch vince clarke die gelegenheit, die titel nach seinen vorstellungen gänzlich neu zu arrangieren. die neu-edition auf vinyl ist 180g schwer. bei der auswahl setzen erasure auf künstler die sie beeinflusst haben: buddy holly (-true love ways-), peter gabriel (-solsbury hill-), the righteous brothers (-you ve lost that lovin feelin -) und buggles (-video killed the radio star-). produziert wurde das album von gareth jones. mit einer top-20-postion in den deutschen charts war das album auch hierzulande entsprechend erfolgreich.

sébastien léger delivers two solid originals and is backed up by arjuna schiks’ trippy dreamy remix. oracle has a french house sound to it characteristic of léger with a moroderesque arpeggio bassline. his excellent production skills shine brightest when he plays the keys in the second break. trytosphere is a somewhat new direction for the frenchman, a sunny track with a balearic feel to it. a real summer soundtrack. arjuna schiks adds a trippy take on the original with a nice upbeat energetic groove layered on top of a spacey bell and synth soundscape which echoes in the background.
